               All About Lamps
Table Lamps

A table lamp is a portable light with one or more bulbs designed to stand freely on a table.

The basic definition of table lamps is easy enough to understand but there is plenty more to
learn in order to know the full story.

Table lamps are one of three lighting options under the umbrella category of portable lamps.
Portable lamps are simply lights that can be picked up, moved and plugged in anywhere there
is an electrical outlet.  In addition to table lamps, both floor lamps and torchieres (floor lamps
with the light shade opening up) are also considered portable lamps.
Table lamps serve many purposes when designing lighting for your home.  Obviously they are
there to provide illumination, but the attractiveness of the lamp itself makes it a key design
element as well.  Re'New Home Center has many styles of table lamps available from simple,
sleek lamp bases to more intricate designs to bold colors and even figures built into the
design.
And while the variety of lamp bases available for our table lamps is impressive, it pales in
comparison to the unique styling and options we have available in our lamp shades.  Made
from linen, fabrics, satin or glass, Our manufacturer's table lamps are designed with fashion
in mind. From simple cone shapes to squares, bell shapes and more, many of the shades on
our table lamps have beautiful adornments as well as an astounding number of colors.  We
even carry a fine line of Tiffany style and Art Glass table lamps as well.  All of this means you
can find just the right table lamp for the right place in your home.
Table lamps are great for task lighting such as by a desk or next to your favorite reading
chair.  They also provide a nice general illumination to fill in dark areas where your overhead
lighting may need help.  Table lamps also make great accent pieces and can be used as
accent lighting for key design features in your home.
Floor Lamps

Merriam-Webster defines a floor lamp as, a tall lamp that
stands on the floor.
Well you certainly can’t argue with that definition, and yet
it only scratches the surface. Floor lamps are part of a
larger group called portables. Simply put, portable lamps
are lights (or lamps) that can be picked up, moved and
plugged in anywhere there is an electrical outlet.  In
addition to floor lamps, both table lamps and torchieres
(floor lamps with the light shade opening up) are also
considered portable lamps.
When planning lighting for your home, floor lamps can help you in many ways.  They are a
great source of general illumination and as such can really help light up dark corners and
larger rooms.  Floor lamps can also act as an under layer of light, creating task lighting right
where you need it.      Obvious examples of how this works would be floor lamps next to your
favorite reading chair or a floor lamp casting light down onto your desk.  In fact the Kichler
Lamp and Accessory line has a full collection of " At Work" lamps for just this purpose. Of
course, one of the great advantages of floor lamps is the flexibility of moving them right
where you need them, so the choice is yours.
Floor lamps come in a tremendous variety of styles with beautiful variations in finish, shades
and materials.  From sleek and modern to simple classic brass to bolder lines and more
ornate styles, The Supply House has the right floor lamp for your décor. We also offers a fine
selection of Tiffany style and Art Glass floor lamps for those who need a little more color in
their lives.

Torchieres

Merriam-Webster defines Torchiere (or Torchère) as a tall ornamental stand for a candlestick
or candelabra or an electric floor lamp giving indirect light.

Kichler defines Torchiere as a tall floor lamp with a bowl-shaped glass that diffuses the light
and directs it upward.
At its most basic, torchiere is from the French torche, their word for torch.  Meaning, you have
a tall torch that directs the light straight up but also provides a gentle illumination to the
sides.  Fortunately, we have electricity and don’t have to settle for open flames in our homes.
Torchieres are part of a larger group called portables. Simply put, portable lamps are lights
(or lamps) that can be picked up, moved and plugged in anywhere there is an electrical
outlet.  In addition to torchieres, both table lamps and floor lampsare also considered
portable lamps.

Tochieres are a great part of any lighting design because they offer all of the beauty you find
with other lamps but because the light points up you never have to worry about glare.  In
addition, with the glass of the torchiere opening upwards, you are able to use higher wattage
bulbs so you can light up a larger area with just one lamp.  Because of this, torchieres are a
great addition for general lighting and have the great advantage that you can place them
wherever you have a dark spot and an outlet.  Torchieres can work well and look great in the
living room, den, bedroom and family room.
And ReNew Home Center has a tremendous selection of torchieres available for your home.
In traditional, Tiffany and Art Glass as well as more modernstyles, we can provide just the
right lamp for your decor.

Q – When would I need portables?
A - Desk lamps, Table lamps, Floor lamps, Torchieres.  These are known as Portables
because they can be picked up and plugged in wherever there is an electrical outlet. All other
lighting is direct-wired into your home. Many rooms will need more light in certain areas than
a chandelier or other light fixture can provide.  That’s where portables are important.

Q – What do portables do besides look pretty?

A – Think of the rooms and areas in your home where you need more light for tasks such as
homework, reading in a chair or reading in bed.  Portables can provide the needed light for
those activities.

Q – How far off the floor should a floor lamp or table lamp be?
A – The bottom of the lampshade should be approximately 42 inches from the floor’s
surface.  Desk lamps should be 16 inches above the work surface and 13 inches from the
front of a desk.  Torchieres, used to light dark corners, can be from 66 to 72 inches from the
floor.
